    What is router?

A router is a device in computer networking that forwards data packets to their destinations, based on their addresses. The work a router does it called routing, which is somewhat like switching, but a router is different from a switch. The latter is simply a device to connect machines to form a LAN.
Routers use headers and forwarding tables to determine the best path for forwarding the packets, and they use protocols such as ICMP to communicate with each other and configure the best route between any two hosts. When data is sent between locations on one network or from one network to a second network the data is always seen and directed to the correct location by the router. router is connected to at least two networks, commonly two LANs or WANs or a LAN and its ISP's network. Routers are located at gateways, the places where two or more networks connect, and are the critical device that keeps data flowing between networks and keeps the networks connected to the Internet.

A router is specialized computer connected to more than one network. It runs software that allows it to move data from one network to another. Routers operate at the network layer. The primary function of a router is to connect networks together and keep Layer 2 broadcast traffic under control. There are several companies that make routers: Cisco, Juniper, Nortel, Redback, Lucent, 3Com, and HP just to name a few.

A network router is a more sophisticated network device compared to either a network switch or a network hub. Like hubs and switches, routers are typically small, box-like pieces of equipment that multiple computers can connect to.
Each features a number of ports on the front or back of the unit that provide the connection points for these computers, a connection for electric power, and a number of LED lights to display device status.
While routers, hubs and switches all share similar physical appearance, routers differ substantially in their inner workings.

The "router" used in home and small networks is more accurately called a "residential gateway". A router is the first line of security from intrusion into a network. Enabling the highest level of security on the router is the best way to keep your computer system and information safe from attack.

routers are all devices that let you connect one or more computers to other computers, networked devices, or even other networks.
Each has two or more connectors called ports into which you plug in the cables to make the connection.
Varying degrees of magic happen inside the device and therein lies the difference.

Routers have access to network layer addresses and contain software that enables them to determine which of several possible paths between those addresses is best for particular transmission.

A hardware device designed to take incoming packets, analyzing the packets and then directing them to the appropriate locations, moving the packets to another network, converting the packets to be moved across a different network interface, dropping the packets, or performing any other number of other actions. In the picture to the right, is a Linksys BEFSR11 router and is what most home routers look like. A router has a lot more capabilities than other network devices such as a hub or a switch that are only able to perform basic network functions. For example, a hub is often used to transfer data between computers or network devices, but does not analyze or do anything with the data it is transferring. Routers however can analyze the data being sent over a network, change how it is packaged and send it to another network or over a different network. For example, routers are commonly used in home networks to share a single Internet connection with multiple computers.
