well, first it's a good way to get yourself fit and healthy. it also makes you practice and apply discipline, because if you are into sports, you will be determined to practice, and try to excel in it. sports is good both for your physical, mental and emotional well-being. when my son gets a little older, i'll make him join in sports.
i believe sports is a good training for kids so they become competitive, and passionate about things. of course, the good benefits that we can get like healthy and fit body is already a given, but more than that, it makes us understand how to lead and follow (especially in team sports like basketball), it teaches us how to fight and play fair, how to accept defeat and victory, it teaches us how to believe in ourselves, and discipline also. no player (or anybody for that matter) has ever excelled in his field without going through hard work and practice.
