Is there a Jewish custom/tradition for naming a child?

Hi

My name is Marla and I am doing a report on my name. I don't have my real mom so I asked my grandmother about why I was named what I am. She said it was what it is because my paternal grandmother's name started with and "M" and it was Jewish tradition/custom to have a name that matched with the other name. I can't find the tradition/custom. Any help? Thank you
